An Honest Review Of The Citroen Dispatch

The Citroen Dispatch is a panel van, which is available in several different specifications; with load bearing capacity ranging from 5 to 7.0m3. This review will focus on the most basic version, the SWB low roof van L1H1, which has a height of 1,449mm, a width of 1,600mm, a length of 2,254mm and a 5.0m3 load capacity.

Fuel Consumption

One of the Citroen Dispatch’s strongest points is it’s economical fuel consumption; with careful driving the version with the 90 bhp version offers 42.2 mpg and has CO2 emissions of 177 g/km. All versions of the Dispatch run on diesel.
The service times of the Dispatch are quite long – yearly or every 20,000 miles – and many of its rivals offer lengthier times between services. Insurance costs, however, are extremely competitive.

Inside the Cab

There isn’t much legroom inside the front of the cab, especially in the middle seat, but there are some useful features, such a large windscreen, a cup holder, door pockets. The driver’s seat is lower than many other similar vehicles, making it an ideal choice for delivery drivers as access is easy. Remote central locking and a ‘Traffic’ satellite navigation system are fitted as standard.

Performance

The Citroen Dispatch is an easy and comfortable van to drive as the steering column and driver’s seat are both height adjustable. There have been reported problems with the electronic power steering, but these have been smoothed out. Comfortable suspension, and easy manoeuvrability make it the ideal choice from winding through city traffic. It’s easy to park as it’s the same size as a large people carrier.

Load Area

The smallest version of the Citroen Dispatch can cope with a load of 1200 kg. Rear air suspension is an option that allows drivers to lower the height of the rear, making loading and unloading much easier – and the height readjusts itself automatically if the driver forgets to reset it.

Safety

The Dispatch has an excellent safety record and has a good reliable engine, if somewhat noisy. Side airbags are not fitted as standard, however, and neither are front fog lights.

Overall Verdict

The Citroen Dispatch is a high quality vehicle that represents excellent value for money. It’s a reliable workhorse of a panel van that can cope with large loads, whilst handling and parking like a car.

The current Citroen Dispatch, launched in 2007 and given a facelift in 2011, is the result of a joint venture between PSA Peugeot Citroen and Fiat. It is a much bigger van than its predecessor and competes with the likes of the Vauxhall Vivaro and Volkswagen Transporter. The Dispatch is a versatile van and is available as a standard panel van, crew van and a minibus. It is available in two different wheelbase lengths and two different roof heights with a variety of seating and load options. 

The Dispatch has twin rear doors fitted as standard and two sliding side doors. The sliding doors open to a width of 924mm – enough to load a Euro pallet. The smallest Dispatch can carry two Euro pallets and has a payload of almost a tonne (988kg) while the longer wheelbase Dispatch can carry three Euro pallets and has a payload of up to 1,200kg. 

There are two diesel engines to choose from; the 90bhp 1.6-litre, which is only available in the lower roof vans, returns 42.2mpg and the 125bhp 2.0-litre which is more efficient returning 44.1mpg. Service intervals are 12 months or 20,000 miles and insurance costs should be competitive ranging from group 3E to 4E.

Driver comfort has not been forgotton with an adjustable driver’s seat and adjustable steering column, electric windows and built-in SatNav system. A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted to the 1.6 Hdi models and a six-speed manual gearbox features on the 2.0 Hdi models. Every Dispatch has a twin passenger seat and there are numerous storage bins and cubby holes, including a large glovebox, deep passenger side bin and overhead storage shelf. 

Air suspension is an optional extra enabling the rear of the van to be lowered to 491mm, ideal for manual loading. The system is self-levelling, maintaining a constant ride height, and includes tyre pressure monitoring. The system will automatically reset itself to the correct height if you forget before driving off.
